Em’s Swindon and Oxford Half Marathon Challenge

Story

Em is raising money for Asthma Relief Charity because her daughter Lolly has suffered from complex asthma all her life and has required nebulisers many times to save her life. “The Asthma Relief Charity is a very small charity in Swindon that does incredible work providing nebulisers for people with respiratory conditions because, remarkably, due to the cost, nebulisers are not always freely available to people with breathing related illnesses. In September and October, I am running Swindon and Oxford Half marathons in 2 weeks (not easy for me) to raise money for this fabulous charity.

Please help if you can.”

Asthma Relief is a charity which was set up in 1997, by retired Swindon engineer, Dave Penman. Sadly, many years earlier Dave’s 28 year old brother died following an Asthma attack. Dave had always hoped that when he retired from running his engineering business, he would be able to do something to help asthmatics and people with breathing problems.

However, in 1997, Dave suffered a massive heart attack and was advised by the doctors that he would not be able to work again. During his time in hospital, Dave noticed that the patients on his ward were sharing one nebuliser (a nebuliser is a device which is used to administer a solution of medication in the form of a fine mist for the patient to inhale, thus enabling them to breathe more easily).

(This is the type of nebuliser compressor we normally supply. The Pari Boy Classic is a powerful nebuliser inhalation device, which can be used to administer all commonly prescribed medication for respiratory conditions)

It was at this point that the idea of setting up a charity to support people with breathing difficulties by supplying nebulisers to them via hospitals, doctor’s surgeries, community nurses etc, came to Dave. Asthma Relief was set up from Dave’s hospital bed. We are now donating (free of charge) around 1,500 nebulisers every year to people of all ages throughout the UK. Due to the cost, nebulisers are not always freely available to people with breathing related illnesses.

As well as asthmatics, nebulisers are also used to treat the following groups of people:-

  • Patients with COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease)
  • Bronchiectasis Patients
  • Emphysema Patients
  • Hospice & Palliative Care Patients
  • Elderly people
  • Children with complex medical needs
  • Patients with cystic fibrosis

Asthma Relief is a very cost effective charity which operates from a small office in Swindon.  Patricia Davis – Charity Manager, together with a part time assistant, a small team of fundraisers and dedicated trustees and volunteers are committed to improving the quality of life for both children and adults who suffer from breathing difficulties. Our work concentrates primarily on providing essential respiratory equipment (usually nebuliser inhalation devices) to hospitals, doctor’s surgeries, medical centres, hospices & palliative care teams, ambulances, community nurses and individuals(where advised by their GP).
